A moderate increase in body weight, particularly when it is loaded around “the middle’ is a good sign of a pre-deliction toward type two diabetes. Carrying an extra 5 or 10 kilos in weight can cause general tiredness and lethargy. While it is a current trend on TV to make it “O.K.” for people to be overwight, it is not okay if one wants a long, healthy life. Any dgree of being overweight adds a detrimental load onto the arterial and cardio systems.
The other day while walking for excercise we saw a man walking toward us holding his walking stick across his body. He was balancing with it and trying to cover the fact that he needed a walking stick. As he neared, we said “hello” and he returned the salutation. It was obvious that he had recently suffered a stroke. He of course was doing his best to overcome that stroke.
Stroke is often caused by the downline effects of being overweight. So many men see it as quite acceptable to have a “large tummy” from late thirties onward. If only they could see 10 or 20 years into their future. Stroke, diabetes, loss of activity and a general decline in health is the absolute inevitable result.
So lets all watch what we eat, both quantity and quality, and excercise at least moderately on a daily basis. The irony about this is that as we excercise by walking, jogging and lifting weights we put weight onto our bones which is also a good thing for long-term health!!
